چکیده

In (1a), the verb shows subject agreement with 'Alemu (3sm)' and object agreement with 'the dead cat (3sm)'. Probably due to the strong verbal agreement, a null pronominal (‘pro’) can be used as the subject (or the object), as in (1b). Besides agreement-marking, Chaha verbs host prefixes to yield transitivity alternations, passivization, and causativization. Hetzron’s (1977) summary of the three main verbal prefixes for these purposes, t-, a-, and atis shown in (2).

On the Argument Structure of Verbs with Bi- and Mono-Eventive Uses

In this paper, we discuss how the choice of the external argument as either an agent or a causer influences the interpretation of a specific class of verbs, which we propose to call ‘defeasible causatives’, cf. Section 2. The terms ‘agent’ and ‘causer’ are not easy to define. For our purposes, it is enough to assume that agents are (intentionally acting) humans, while causers either are natural...

Object and Action Naming: A Study on Persian-Speaking Children

Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...

Strategies of Modern Hebrew Verb Formation

Reinvestigation of Modern Hebrew verb formation strategies suggests that assignment of recent as well as potential innovations to canonical morphological forms in the verb system is essentially semantic, and is based on the notions "causation," "agency" and "activity." It is claimed that the basic division is not between transitive and intransitive verbs, but rather into agentive and nonagentiv...

The influence of semantic and morphological complexity of verbs on sentence recall: Implications for the nature of conceptual representation and category-specific deficits.

One hundred and forty normal undergraduate students participated in a Proactive Interference (PI) experiment with sentences containing verbs from four different semantic and morphological classes (lexical causatives, morphological causatives, and morphologically complex and simplex perception verbs). Past research has shown significant PI build-up effects for semantically and morphologically co...

A Unified Analysis of French Causatives

The treatment of French causatives and pronominal affixes outlined in Miller and Sag (1997) and Abeillé et al. (1998) is notable for its comprehensive coverage and analytic detail, but it relies on a number of ad hoc features and types that have little empirical justification. We sketch a new treatment of the same data set, which eliminates multiple lexical entries for the causative, as well as...
